Siskiyou Arts Calendar

Arts Events in far northern California

July 2008

Dear SAC Arts E-Newsletter Subscribers,

Its official summer has arrived. That means Weed’s Carnivale, Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival and Mt Shasta 4th of July festivities are just around the corner. What fun!

I’m not going to miss attending the All-Star String Summit Concert This is a world-class fiddling and stringed instruments event that only happens at COS. I attended last year and wouldn’t miss it this year.

Hmmm… spending the weekend in Happy Camp listening to music and poetry, eating good food… That’s sounds great. Hey, that why I live here?

Save the date for the Annual SAC Garden Party on Saturday August 23, 2008, 6:30- 9:00 at Native Grounds in Mount Shasta. We will have food, music and lots of fun for all. Please contact me if you want to display your art or read a poem.

Don't forget to check out the SAC Announcements page for scholarships, grants, call to artist and job opportunities.

Take the time to experience some art and support our local artists!

Lauri Sturdivant
Executive Director

In his forty year career, Bill Owens has captured some of the most pivotal cultural phenomenon of the late 20th Century. In 1969, he photographed the legendary free Rolling Stones concert at Altamont Speedway, where the Hell's Angels served as security and killed one fan. Throughout the 1970's, Owens witnessed the massive immigration of rural peoples into Californian suburbs, and subsequently became one of the first photographers to aim his lens at the national growth of suburban sprawl, which resulted in his critically acclaimed book Suburbia (1973). Influenced greatly by the work of Farm Security Administration photographers, Diane Arbus, and Weegee, Owens records the day to day lives of middle class America , while endeavoring to engage in what he described as "a visual anthropology" with the camera.
